Side effects, what to expect
Most side effects are gastrointestinal, temporary, and manageable. They’re most common during dose escalation and typically ease within 1–2 weeks. Because you see us every week, we catch them early.
Nausea
Common
Most noticeably during dose increases. Eating smaller meals, choosing bland foods, and staying upright after eating helps considerably. Usually fades within a few weeks at each new dose.
Constipation
Common
More common at higher doses. Increasing fiber and water intake, along with light movement, are the primary defenses. Fiber supplements like Metamucil can help if needed.
Fatigue
Common
Early
Often tied to reduced caloric intake in the early weeks. Maintaining adequate protein intake, minimum 100g/day is the most effective defense. Usually resolves as the body adjusts.
Diarrhea
LESS Common
More likely at higher doses or in patients who eat high-fat meals. Dietary adjustments and temporarily slowing dose titration resolve most cases within days.
Pancreatitis
RARE
Not recommended for patients with a history of pancreatitis. Our intake form screens for this. If you experience severe abdominal pain, contact us or seek care immediately.
Thyroid concerns
RARE
Semaglutide is not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 syndrome. This is screened during intake evaluation.
Why weekly visits change everything. Side effects are the leading reason patients abandon GLP-1 treatment prematurely. Because your provider sees you every week, dose increases can be slowed, timing adjusted, and dietary guidance given before any side effect becomes a barrier.
